The World Cup is one of the most-awaited feasts for sure. So let's check out some interesting facts about it during this countdown!
1. The 2022 Qatar World Cup football championship is the first to be held in the Middle East, and also the smallest host nation (roughly the size of Jamaica) over the years.
2. When summer hits Qatar, temperatures have been known to soar to more than 40 degrees Celsius, therefore the World Football Championship will be held in winter for the first time. Advanced air conditioning facilities are installed in 8 stadiums which are located in 5 cities to provide a better stage for the players.
3. It will be held from 21 November till 18 December this year, 64 matches within 28 days. It is the shortest tournament since the 1978 edition, and it is also the last World Cup tournament to feature 32 teams. The number will jump to 48 teams in 2026.
4. The World Cup final is due to be held on 18 December 2022, which is also Qatar National Day.
5. Each team will have a maximum of three opportunities to make substitutions during the game, with five substitutes per match instead of three, which is the first time in World Cup tournaments.
6. Drinking in public is considered a crime in Qatar. But for this World Cup, Qatar’s Supreme Committee on Delivery and Legacy has allowed alcohol in some designated “fan zones” outside stadiums and other hospitality venues.
7. The Qatar World Cup emblem resembles the number 8 and the infinity symbol. The top of the emblem has two dots with a soccer ball between the dots and a decorative pattern at the bottom of the emblem. The words "FIFA WORLD CUP Qatar 2022" are printed below. The emblem is displayed in a rotating gesture, symbolizing the globe and football. The number "8" represents the eight host stadiums. It also represents shawls which residents of the Gulf countries often wear in winter, highlighting the 2022 World Cup winter scheduling, and waves showing the desert dunes.
8. The Qatar World Cup mascot is called La'eeb, which means "extremely skilled/superior player" in Arabic. La'eeb encourages every player to believe in themselves, now is all there is. La’eeb is full of youthful energy and will bring us a lot of joy and confidence!
